Oh, deer! It's fawning season!

Fawn

The City of West Lake Hills has an abundance of newborn fawns. Fawns are typically left in areas with tall grass or bushes, but sometimes they are left in more open areas, including backyards. If you come across a fawn nestled alone—leave it be. A doe will leave her fawn for hours at a time while she forages for food and returns only to briefly nurse the baby. The mother deer is typically in the vicinity observing from a distance. Approaching a fawn that is not visibly injured or in distress could cause the fawn to run away, leaving its hiding place where its mother left it.

If you stumble upon a fawn that may be in danger or is in visible distress, contact a wildlife rehabilitator, Travis County Game Warden, or call the Texas Parks and Wildlife Information line at 1-800-792-1112.
